What does it mean to love like Jesus? Well, it can mean a lot of things and we’ll dissect three ways we can love like Jesus better this month. Jesus is the embodiment of God here on Earth. So with that we know that he is the embodiment of goodness, holiness and love.
So in our quest to be holy and to love better, we should model… Christ.
Now one of the first things that we see Christ do, is that he completely submits to the Father. We see this in his decision to come to Earth with the sole purpose of accomplishing his work on the cross... Which was the greatest act of love ever!!!! (John 15:13)
We often don’t talk about this, but the first way we can love like Jesus is to submit to God. Jesus often said things like “I only do what I see my father is doing” (John 5:19). So all those healings, feeding people, and forgiving of sins that we see Jesus do, is only because he says, I’m doing what the father has been doing all along… I’m only continuing his work.
Jesus is God, and if he says he only does this because the Father empowers him to, then what does that say about us?
We have no true ability to love unconditionally apart from our submission to God. We are naturally selfish creatures who look out for what is best for us and what will give us gain, our comfort, etc.
To submit ourselves to God, his will and his ways, opens us to the capacity to love. When I follow scripture to think more highly of someone else before my self, I am now open to loving others. When I follow scripture on how to treat my husband, a friend, an enemy, the poor, I am now open to true love.
In and of myself, I would love to think that I am this really nice person that always wants to be nice and loving to everyone, but let’s be real, I’m nice, but I’m not that nice. Without submission God’s word, I would not be the most loving person.
So here’s some scriptures we can reflect on and hopefully apply them this week.
